Education

It is important that thorough background checks are made on anybody who will be working in a school or further education institution (including a sixth form college), both to prevent unsuitable people from gaining access to children and to maintain the integrity of the teaching profession.

The following checks should be made on all people:

  • Identity confirmation
  • Academic qualifications, where appropriate
  • Professional and character references
  • Previous employment history
  • Criminal record check 
  • List 99 
  • Health

The following checks should also be carried out on teachers working in maintained schools, non-maintained special schools or pupil referral units:
